Understanding Zakat Calculation
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, mandatory for every adult Muslim of sound mind who possesses the minimum amount of wealth (Nisab) for a lunar year. The standard rate of Zakat is 2.5% (or 1/40th) of your eligible wealth.
What items are Zakatable?
- Cash: Money in hand, bank accounts, or given as loans to others.
- Gold & Silver: Personal jewelry (depending on school of thought) and investment bullion.
- Business Assets: Stock in trade, raw materials, and cash associated with the business.
- Shares & Investments: Stocks, bonds, and other tradable financial instruments.
Nisab Threshold
Zakat is only due if your net assets exceed the Nisab threshold. Nisab is traditionally defined as the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Most scholars recommend using the silver Nisab threshold to ensure the poor receive more benefit.
